Philippe, duc d’Orléans, était le frère du roi Louis XIV.   Notoirement libertin (jusqu’au point où l’on exclut des affaires détat) son goût du théâtre lui mena à soutenir la troupe de Molière entre 1658 et 1665.

En 1661 Monsieur le frère du Roi épousa Henriette d'Angleterre qui mourut en 1670, puis l’année suivante se maria avec Elisabeth Charlotte de Bavière.   Il participa à la guerre des Pays-Bas en 1677.

Philippe, Duke of Orleans was the younger brother of King Louis XIV.   A notorious libertine (to the extent that he was excluded from state affairs) he was drawn by his love of theatre to become patron of Molière’s troop between 1658 and 1665.

In 1661 the duke married Henrietta of England who died in 1670, then Elizabeth Charlotte of Bavaria in the following year.   He fought in the war against the Netherlands in 1677.
