Armand,
the first Prince of Conti, opposed Louis XIV in the
civil disputes that wracked France from 1648 to 1653. He was
reconciled with the Court in 1654, by which time he had already become patron
of Molières troop as it toured France.

From 1654 until 1657, Armand
involved himself in the military campaigns against Italy and Spain, but on
his return he gave himself up to a life of religious devotion. He
withdrew from Court circles and abandonned the theatre, giving up his
patronage of Molière. He wrote a number of moral treatises,
including a tract against the evils of theatre in 1666.
