Malgré les arrêts de Lully, Molière travailla sur une autre comédie mêlée de musique et de danses avec un jeune compositeur, Marc-Antoine Charpentier.   Dans Le Malade imagainaire Molière prit le rôle d’une hypocondriaque mais, grande ironie, lors de la quatrième représentation il fut atteint par quelque crise de santé.   On le ramena chez lui mais il mourut quelques heures plus tard.

Sa femme Armande dut supplier le roi, Louis XIV, pour qu’il intervienne auprès de l’archevêque de Paris qui avait défendu l’inhumation de Molière en terre consacrée.

Despite Lully’s monopoly on operatic production, Molière worked on a new comedy interspersed with music and dance with a young composer named Marc-Antoine Charpentier.   In The Hypochondriac (sometimes known as the Imaginary Invalid), Molière took the title role but ironically fell ill and collapsed during the fourth performance.   He was taken home and died a few hours later.

His wife Armande had to beg Louis XIV to intercede on her behalf with the Archbishop of Paris so that Molière could be properly buried, a right most actors forfeited by their choice of profession.
