peintre.
Molière reworked Tartuffe and
attempted to stage it under a new title, The Imposter in 1667. It
was, yet again, banned instantly as the power of religious groups opposed to
the theatre continued. A famous theologian, Pierre Nicole, wrote
in a treatise of this year that "theatre by its very nature teaches and
practices vice".
Molière fell seriously ill this
year, to the extent that he was prevented by his doctors from drinking
anything but milk. He was able to produce only one new comedy: The Sicilian.
